Earlier this year members of Birchall Blackburn Law’s Serious and Catastrophic Injury team attended the Spinal Injuries Association’s (SIA) Rebuilding Lives Awards.
Held in the glamorous surroundings of the Birmingham Hilton Metropole, the awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of people in the spinal cord injury community.
Birchall Blackburn Law was delighted to be able to sponsor the ‘Inspirational Achievement Award for Young People’ and meet the three incredible nominees, Callum Sloan, Robert Camm and Patrick Wilson.
Gordon Banks from rugby’s Premiership Champions, Saracens, with Dianne Yates and Kelly Hutton from Birchall Blackburn Law, presented the eventual winner, Robert Camm with the award.
Dianne said: “Robert, Callum and Patrick are incredibly courageous, tough, determined and optimistic in the face of traumatic changes to their young lives. Their achievements are just breath-taking and I’m sure they will go on to do even greater things. It was inspirational to spend time with them and a real honour to play a small part in such an important award ceremony.”
Robert – the winner of the Inspirational Achievement Award for Young People Category – was an active sportsman, rugby player and rower before suffering a C3 spinal injury in a car crash. The spinal injury means that he is now tetraplegic, paralysed from the neck down and reliant on a ventilator for his breathing for the rest of his life.
Determined to rebuild his life as far as he is able, Robert continually pushes his boundaries – with the help of his family and friends – and only a year on from the accident he has started a course in philosophy and politics at Bristol University.
